FCO Minister condemns Iraq mosque attack
Tobias Ellwood condemns attack on Iraqi mosque killing more than 70 people & calls for inclusive government to fight terrorism.
Reacting to news that more than 70 people had been killed in an attack on a mosque yesterday, Minister for the Middle East Tobias Ellwood said:
The United Kingdom condemns the attack on a mosque in Diyala Province, Iraq yesterday that is reported to have resulted in the deaths of over 70 worshippers. My condolences go out to the families of those involved.
Such attacks on places of worship are utterly reprehensible and I welcome the Iraqi authorities’ announcement that a committee has been formed to investigate this incident. The United Kingdom fully supports the Iraqi government in its efforts to uphold the rule of law and bring those responsible for these terrible crimes to justice.
In order to confront the serious threat Iraq faces from terrorism, sectarianism and division, it is vital that a new inclusive government is formed quickly. The British Government continues to urge all of Iraq’s political leaders to work together in forming a national unity government that is able to respond to the needs of the whole of Iraq.
