Commenting on the recent Presidential and legislative elections in Madagascar, the Foreign Office Minister for Africa, Mark Simmonds said:

I welcome today’s inauguration of President Hery Rajaonarimampianina in Madagascar, following successful elections on 20 December. I pay tribute to all those in Madagascar and in the international community who have worked together to bring about the country’s return to an internationally recognised constitutional government following the coup in 2009.

I am pleased that the President has placed an emphasis on respect for human rights and the need to promote reconciliation, good governance and the rule of law during his term in office.
