Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire, has commented on the publication, today, of the Foreign Affairs Committee’s report on the role and future of the Commonwealth.
He said:
“We welcome today’s report by the Foreign Affairs Committee into the role and future of the Commonwealth.
“The Government is committed to strengthening our engagement with, and role within, the Commonwealth. We believe a strong Commonwealth is important to our future prosperity and the national interests of all its member states. We are committed to efforts to strengthen and reform the organisation so that it remains relevant into the future.
The Committee’s interest in the Commonwealth and this report are therefore timely. We will study the recommendations, which should help inform our policy as we implement the Commonwealth modernisation and reform agenda, and as we look ahead to the next Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting a year from today. We will provide a full departmental response to the report in the New Year.”
