Foreign Secretary congratulates Mr Netanyahu on Israeli election victory

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond congratulates Mr Netanyahu on his electoral success.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

The Foreign Secretary said:

I congratulate the people of Israel on their general election. The high turnout is a sign of a vibrant democracy.

I also congratulate Mr Netanyahu on his victory. As one of Israel’s firmest friends, we look forward to good relations with the new Israeli government, when formed, and to working closely together to further a range of common interests including our strong partnerships in trade, technology, and science as well as the vitally important task of building peace and stability between Israel and the Palestinians and the wider Middle East. Making progress towards the two-state solution remains a foreign policy priority for the UK. The UK calls on the new Israeli government to demonstrate leadership and courage in working with the international community to secure the peace which is so strongly in the interests of both Israelis and Palestinians.
