An FCO Spokesperson said:

The Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond spoke to President Abbas two days ago and expressed his condolences for the appalling loss of life and humanitarian situation in Gaza. He welcomed President Abbas’s role in securing the 72 hour ceasefire. The UK believes President Abbas’ leadership remains crucial, as is the Palestinian Authority’s return to Gaza.

The Foreign Secretary also reinforced Britain’s commitment of £15m in emergency humanitarian aid and made clear Britain wanted to see all underlying issues tackled. The UK remains committed towards a viable independent Palestinian state and an end to the suffering once and for all.
