Foreign Secretary welcomes elections in Zambia

Foreign Secretary William Hague congratulated the people of Zambia on their recent elections, and said he looked forward to further deepening of relations between Zambia and the UK.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Speaking today he said:

“I warmly congratulate the people of Zambia on their elections this week. Zambia is undergoing a peaceful transfer of power through the ballot box, which is a proud achievement for the people of Zambia, and for their Government and Election Commission. Zambia has shown Africa and the world the power of democracy.

Former President Banda’s statement conceding defeat and congratulating new President Sata was statesmanlike, and sets an example for all democratic politicians everywhere to follow.

I look forward to working with President Sata and his new Government in the years to come, and further deepening the excellent relations between the UK and Zambia.”
