Foreign Secretary welcomes release of political prisoners in Burma
Foreign Secretary William Hague described the release of a number of political prisoners in Burma as an encouraging first step.
Speaking today the Foreign Secretary said:
“I welcome the news that a number of political prisoners have been released in Burma. We have been pressing for the release of all political prisoners for a long time and this is an encouraging first step. We remain fully supportive of Aung San Suu Kyi’s talks with the Burmese President. We look forward to the hopes for genuine change coming to fruition, and to seeing news of further releases and progress on other important issues.
“The British Ambassador to Burma Andrew Heyn met Aung San Suu Kyi today. We will remain in close contact with her as we analyse the implications of today’s developments, and those over the coming weeks.”
