Friends of Syria unite behind need for negotiated solution
Foreign Secretary: it is crucial that this conflict is brought to an end. There can only be a political solution to this appalling tragedy.
The Foreign Secretary yesterday attended the Friends of Syria Core Group Meeting in Amman. Foreign Ministers met to discuss the US-Russian led initiative to bring together the Syrian regime and Syrian opposition in Geneva to help bring about an end to the crisis (Geneva II).
Speaking after the meeting the Foreign Secretary said:
At yesterday’s meeting we secured a wide ranging agreement on the Geneva II process.
It is crucial that this conflict is brought to an end. There can only be a political solution to this appalling tragedy that has already resulted in thousands of refugees and over 80,000 deaths. We will do our utmost to ensure that the negotiations take place in a constructive manner and that they represent the wishes of the Syrian people.
