Congratulations to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Legal Advisers who received the Competition and Regulatory Team of the Year award, as well as the “Highly Commended” title for Energy & Infrastructure Team of the Year, at this year’s Lawyer Awards.

Competing against 7 finalists, the joint win in collaboration with panel firm Dentons, celebrated their work in providing integrated legal support to policy teams and ministers in relation to interventions in the energy markets to reduce energy bills for households and businesses through the Energy Prices Act 2022.

The DHSC Public Inquiry team were also shortlisted in the Legal Operations Team of the Year category, and while they did not win this time, their shortlisting is an impressive and well-deserved recognition.

The Lawyer Awards are among the most prestigious accolades within the legal industry, with winners selected by a panel featuring industry experts from the Bar, private practice, and in-house sectors.

Celebrating their win, Deputy Director Alexandra Bentley, and Senior Lawyers Joanne Hopkins and Louise Dobrin, who attended the awards ceremony, said:

“We were really proud to represent the team, and the wider GLD, at The Lawyer Awards. We hugely enjoyed the night. Having finished runners up in the Energy category it was a surprise and delight to win in the Competition and Regulatory category.

Our work to deliver support to businesses and households in the face of increased energy prices, partnering with Dentons, really struck a chord with judges and with the fellow nominees in the room.

It is excellent to see the work that we do as government lawyers being recognised for its real-world impact and to be celebrated by our legal peers as the best in the business.”

Christopher McGee-Osborne, Partner at Dentons said:

“Our people always enjoy working with government lawyers. In this case, it was a real privilege to do so on something so important to everyone in the UK.

We felt welcomed into a combined team that played to GLD’s strengths in policy and legislative work and ours in energy regulation and industry commercial arrangements. We hugely admired the way that BEIS Legal managed our team and the wider GLD contingent with so much, apparently effortless, efficiency, pragmatism and sensitivity and generated a real feeling of a vital shared mission.

We’re particularly delighted to have won this award jointly with your team – when the profession in general, the Civil Service and GLD in particular, have faced much pressure, it’s great to see our GLD colleagues’ fantastic work being recognised so publicly.”
