Government Chemist represented at allergen management workshop
Michael Walker presented on food allergy and methods of allergen analysis
Michael Walker, of the Government Chemist programme, was invited to present at a two day intensive workshop on allergen management and advanced testing in Austria in May.
The industry seminar, organised by Romer labs, was attended by managers from analytical service providers and the food industry from Spain, Thailand and Austria.
Michael gave talks on food allergy and methods of allergen analysis, as well as allergen labelling requirements under EU Regulation 1169/2011. Other speakers included Professor Sabine Baumgartner from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna, senior staff of Romer Labs, and Jürgen Schlösser, the Executive Manager R&D International of Dr Oetker Deutschland.
The workshop provided a good opportunity to discuss and agree some further follow up to the recent open access Analyst paper co-authored by Michael which outlines a strategy to address the key measurement challenges in allergen analysis.
The challenges of allergen measurements will also be discussed at the Government Chemist Conference: Science supporting trust in food on 21 to 22 June 2016.
