Honduras’ General Elections
Statement from the British Ambassador to Honduras, Thomas Carter, following publication of the results of the November 2017 elections.
The United Kingdom notes the conclusions of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal of Honduras published on 5 January regarding the challenges to the general election of November 2017. This statement confirmed the election of Juan Orlando Hernández Alvarado as President.
The people of Honduras participated in this election peacefully and in great numbers. However, international observers, including from the European Union, reported numerous irregularities. We urge the Government of Honduras to act on the recommendations of the observer missions and to continue to improve its electoral system in advance of future elections.
The UK calls on all sides to pursue a resolution of the current situation through dialogue and to avoid any further violence. The authorities must continue to protect human rights and work transparently to restore confidence in national institutions.
As a close and long-standing partner for many years, the UK looks forward to continuing our work with Honduras on our shared priorities of development, trade and regional stability.
