How the cost of e-bikes from China impacts consumers and sellers

The TRA has launched a survey, aimed at retailers and consumers, to understand the economic impact of tariffs paid on e-bikes imported from China.

The Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) has today launched a survey to understand any economic impact of the tariffs paid on e-bikes imported from China. We encourage retailers and consumers with an interest in e-bikes to take part. Your feedback will allow us to review and set a fairer tariff if needed. This may change the price we all pay for imported e-bikes in the future.

Tariffs on e-bikes imported from China range from 18.8% to 79.3%.

We want to gather feedback from you if you are an e-bike retailer or a direct consumer.

If you are a UK producer or importer of e-bikes please submit a separate questionnaire via the Trade Remedies Service (TRS).

Our consumer survey is anonymous. If you are a business, the TRA may get in contact to clarify information and for transparency we will publish any evidence provided.

The survey will be open from 14 July 2023 to 27 August 2023. To fill out the survey click here.

Notes to Editors

  • The Trade Remedies Authority is the UK body that investigates whether new trade remedy measures are needed to counter unfair import practices and unforeseen surges of imports.  Read more about the TRA’s mission in its Business Plan.
  • Trade remedy investigations were carried out by the EU Commission on the UK’s behalf until the UK left the EU. Over 40 EU trade remedy measures of interest to UK producers were carried across into UK law when the UK left the EU and the TRA is currently reviewing each one to assess whether it is suitable for UK needs.

  • Tariff Rates: Chinese Exporters who participated in the measure and were sampled get their own bespoke tariff ranging from 18.8%-79.3%. Exporters who participated in the original EU investigation but weren’t sampled get the cooperating rate: 33.4%. Exporters who didn’t participate or didn’t cooperate get the non-cooperating rate: 79.3%.
  • This survey is only open to consumers and upstream/downstream businesses. The survey will only provide evidence for the economic interest test and will not ask for information needed for other parts of the investigation such as the injury assessment. UK producers, importers and exporters who wish to participate in the case should complete a questionnaire and upload to the Trade Remedies Service.
