Human Rights Sensitisation Training for OECS and Barbados Police
British High Commission funds a successful two week sensitisation exercise for police officers of the OECS and Barbados
The civil society organisation United and Strong have successfully concluded a two week human rights sensitisation exercise for police officers of the OECS and Barbados. The training was funded by the British High Commission and facilitated by Maurice Tomlinson (Legal Advisor Marginalized Groups for AIDS-Free World) and former police officer, Reverend Tom Decker of Metropolitan Community Churches. The training was held in Castries, St.Lucia.
The exercise began with the Commissioner and senior officers of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) on Tuesday August 27, 2013. It continued with sessions for inspectors, officers drawn from key departments, officers from outlying police stations, probationers and special constables. Approximately one hundred twenty-seven (127) officers were reached. The initiative was further extended to officers from the OECS (except Dominica) and Barbados with the cooperation of the Regional Security System (RSS). The British High Commission’s Debra Worrell and Commissioner of Police Vernon Francois of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force also addressed officers at the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force Academy at La Toc as part of the exercise.
Human Rights Sensitisation Training for OECS and Barbados Police
This is part of on-going efforts by the RSLPF to incorporate human rights as an integral part of regular training. The expectation is that by these officers passing on their knowledge to others in their police forces, the entire region will ultimately benefit from better law prevention and enforcement.
United and Strong also collaborated on this exercise with AIDS Free World, the CariFLAGS Eastern Caribbean Hub and the Caribbean HIV AIDS Alliance (CHAA).
