Scotland Office Minister David Mundell has congratulated Team GB’s Men and Women’s curling teams for their double medal success at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Mr Mundell who met the teams last month at the training base in Stirling before they flew out to Russia was full of praise for the “incredible effort” of David Murdoch and Eve Muirhead’s teams.

He said:

It has been an incredible effort by both the men’s and women’s teams in Sochi. The medals they have won reflect their hard work, commitment, dedication and love for the sport of curling.

Winning an Olympic medal completes an incredible couple of years for Eve Muirhead and her team. They have won medals at European, World and now Olympic level. The women’s team have been through the full range of emotions in Sochi but with many years ahead of them I am sure that they will find even more success in the future.

I am sure there is disappointment for the men having lost the final today. David Murdoch is an absolute credit to his sport, for many years he has raised the bar high for curling in this country and I’m sure that as they return home he and his team can reflect and be very pleased to return with a silver medal.

Our curlers are a source of pride for a nation and with the backing of funding from UKSport they have helped to raise the profile of curling in this country even further. I am sure curling clubs across the country from Lockerbie to Aberdeen will be full in the weeks ahead as more people look to emulate their Olympic heroes.
