The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have informed the Department of Health that from 1 February 2013, the marketing and use of elemental copper as a biocide will not be allowed under the Biocidal Products Directive and the national Biocidal Products Regulations 2001, which implement the directive in Great Britain.

For users and suppliers of water treatment systems that use elemental copper for legionella control ie copper ionisation systems, it is important that you read the information published on HSE’s website for their statement.  Organisations have a responsibility to manage the risks from legionella and it is essential that these duties continue to be met and that legionella control is not compromised. To aid organisations that may be affected, HSE’s website provides a list of simple FAQs on their website and contact details for further information.
