In light of the recent political and judicial developments in Guatemala, the European Union and its Member States call on all actors to engage in a constructive manner in order to strengthen democracy and justice and to guarantee an open, peaceful and timely electoral process in accordance with the Constitution.

We expect the responsible Guatemalan institutions to continue to work independently to promote good governance, reforms and development and to facilitate a smooth transition to a new government which will take office in January 2016. We trust that the current corruption cases will be brought to justice impartially and fairly.

We recall our strong commitment to the principles and standards of Rule of Law and Human Rights and our continued support to the political institutions of Guatemala, civil society, the justice system and CICIG in their work.
