Major refurbishment project delivers new conference centre for Aldershot Garrison

A disused Junior Ranks bar at St Omer Barracks, Aldershot, has been converted into a modern conference centre as part of the army’s efforts to deliver fit-for-purpose infrastructure for service personnel.

The c. £900k conversion project was proposed under Future Soldier, funded by the army and delivered through the Defence Estate Optimisation (DEO) Army programme by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), who contracted Aspire Defence and D Square.

The project has made a significant contribution toward delivering a more efficient defence estate. More than £1 million has been saved by re-purposing an underused asset, with a further £1 million to be saved in future running costs.

The new Garrison Conference Centre has been named the ‘Buller Conference and Meeting Centre’ to honour the history of the Buller Barracks in Aldershot. To retain Garrison history, the original metal wording from the front gates of Buller Barracks was rescued and reused to form a wall outside the new facility.
