Culture Secretary Maria Miller today welcomed the progress made by the newspaper industry on setting up a new self-regulator.

The newspaper and magazine industry today set out the proposed structure and rules of the new Independent Press Standards Organisation.

Lord Justice Leveson’s Report set out the need for a new system of independent self-regulation of the press.

Maria Miller said:

We have been urging the newspaper industry for several months to set up a new self-regulator, and are glad that they seem to now be making progress.

We all want to see the principles of the Leveson report implemented and the self-regulatory body is a key component of that.

Miller updated MPs on delivering a new system of independent self-regulation of the press in a Ministerial Written Statement.
