Marking five years of the Regulators’ Code

The Regulators’ Code will be five-years-old on 6 April 2019.

The Code was launched in 2014 under the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Act 2006 to promote proportionate, consistent, accountable and targeted activity through transparent and effective dialogue between regulators and those they regulate.

Regulators within scope of the Regulators’ Code are diverse but its six main themes are widely applicable.

  • Regulators should carry out their activities in a way that supports those they regulate to comply and grow

  • Regulators should provide simple and straightforward ways to engage with those they regulate and hear their views

  • Regulators should base their regulatory activities on risk

  • Regulators should share information about compliance and risk

  • Regulators should ensure clear information, guidance and advice is available to help those they regulate meet their responsibilities to comply

  • Regulators should ensure that their approach to their regulatory activities is transparent

Regulators, including local authorities and fire and rescue authorities, must have regard to the Code when developing policies and procedures that guide their regulatory activities.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards works to support the effective implementation of the Regulators’ Code and would be interested to hear from businesses and regulators who have examples of how this has been done well. Please email Neil.Wilkes@beis.gov.uk
