Minister for Burma welcomes Aung San Suu Kyi’s joint statement on Rakhine state with Burmese parliamentarians

Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire: "I echo the statement’s calls for increased security, respect for human rights regardless of ethnic group or religion, accountability for crimes committed, and increased humanitarian support."

Following Aung San Suu Kyi’s joint statement on Rakhine state with Burmese parliamentarians, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister of State Rt Hon Hugo Swire MP said:

“I welcome the joint statement on the situation in Rakhine State from Burma’s Parliamentary Committee on Rule of Law, chaired by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and ethnic MPs.

“I echo the statement’s calls for increased security, respect for human rights regardless of ethnic group or religion, accountability for crimes committed, and increased humanitarian support. I also welcome its call for the issue of citizenship to be looked at urgently.

“The UK continues to stand beside those in Burma working for freedom and democracy.”
