Minister for Europe welcomes Belarus opposition figures to London

Minister for Europe David Lidington met political opposition figures from Belarus on 15 December in London.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Speaking after the meeting the Minister for Europe said:

“I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet members of the Belarusian political opposition today, having first met them in Warsaw in the margins of the Eastern Partnership Summit in September. I told them that I was aware that conditions had worsened for them in the last few months. I noted that, even though they held differing political views to each other, they were putting these differences aside and concentrating on building a consensus on their key priorities. I reassured them that the UK would continue to pursue all means possible to keep up the pressure for the release and rehabilitation of prisoners and for the promotion of democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Belarus. We held a useful discussion on what further steps the UK and EU could take to help.”
