New agreement promotes trade between UK and Pakistan
MOU signed between British Business Centre and Karachi Chambers of Commerce and Industry to encourage trade between UK and Pakistan.
MoU signing by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the British Business Centre, Malahat Awan, and the President of KCCI, Younus Bashir.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the British Business Centre and the Karachi Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday 19th April 2016. The British Business Centre is a new body set up to assist British and Pakistani businesses develop closer links.
The signing took place at the British Deputy High Commission in Karachi. It was witnessed by:
- H.E. Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan, Governor of Sindh
- John Tucknott MBE,British Deputy High Commissioner
- Siraj Kassim Teli, Chairman Businessmen Group and former President of Karachi Chambers of Commerce and Industry (KCCI)
Speaking at the ceremony as Chief Guest, Governor of Sindh – H.E. Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan said:
The bi-lateral trade and investment relationship between our 2 countries holds great significance for the Government of Pakistan.
The UK Prime Minister – David Cameron has underlined the UK Government’s full support for a democratic Pakistan and has offered assistance along the democratic path the Pakistani people have chosen.
We want this relationship to flourish in the coming years and we hope such initiatives continue to take place in order to build the relationship between our 2 countries.
The British Deputy High Commissioner, John Tucknott MBE said:
The UK already enjoys a strong relationship with Pakistan in the key area of prosperity. The British Business Centre’s goal is to contribute to an increase in bilateral trade and investment, in line with the commitments made by Prime Ministers David Cameron and Nawaz Sharif when they met in London in April 2014.
We welcome the support that the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry is extending towards the Centre in order to help achieve this goal.
Aims of MoU
The MoU was signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the British Business Centre, Malahat Awan, and the President of KCCI, Younus Bashir. It will facilitate and expand trade and investment cooperation between the United Kingdom and the Province of Sindh through:
- the exchange of information on economic, commercial and industrial matters
- specific business opportunities available in Sindh and the United Kingdom
At the ceremony, Chairman Businessmen Group and Former President of KCCI, Siraj Kassim Teli said:
I am honoured and delighted to come here today and witness the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the British Business Centre and Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Karachi as a city has much to offer in the development of Pakistan, being the country’s financial capital and largest city, the opportunities are numerous.
We already see a strong British trade and investment presence in Karachi and in Sindh and with this agreement we hope more British businesses and investors will come and see firsthand the opportunities that Sindh and Pakistan overall has to offer.
British Business Centre in Pakistan
The British Business Centre will provide a base for visiting UK companies and offer access to a number of services to UK and Pakistani member companies including:
- market research
- business opportunity promotion
- event management
- networking opportunities
- bespoke professional and sector specific services
