New road markings and road studs for the A1 in Northumberland

Work to refurbish road markings and replace road studs along 35 miles of the A1 in Northumberland will begin next week.

Highways Agency Project Manager Nick Adshead said:

This extensive project will begin in Berwick and work its way south passing Haggerston, Fenwick, Belford, Brownieside, Alnwick, Newton on the Moor and Felton. We will be replacing the road markings and road studs on both carriageways, improving safety for drivers in Northumberland. To minimise any disruption caused by the roadworks, we are carrying out the work in three phases.

Phase 1 will take place from 23 June to 9 July, between Berwick and East Ord. Phase 2 will take place from 17 July to 30 September, between Scremerston and Belford. And phase 3 will take place from 1 to 13 October, between Denwick and Felton.

Overnight, traffic lights will be in operation and drivers will be in convoy at 10mph on the unaffected carriageway. During the day there will be lane closures in place and a 50mph speed limit in operation. During phase 3 of the work there will also be 5 miles of lane 1 and 2 closures between Denwick and Felton from 1 to 13 October.
