Newport Celebrations: Bands, Burgers & Battle of Britain Flypast
More family activities and events have been added to this Saturday's NATO-themed host city celebration to be held in Newport.
The events, organised jointly by the UK Government and Newport City Council, will start with the Household Cavalry band playing music around the city centre from 10:30. Residents will get to taste the food and drink of the Alliance’s 28 nations at a festival running along the banks of the River Usk near the Riverfront Theatre and The Wave.
On offer will be reindeer burgers from Iceland, waffles from Belgium, smörgåsbord from Denmark, paella from Spain and much more. The British stall will offer up Welsh cheese from Ceredigion and locally-brewed liquor.
Four local bands will entertain the crowd, while children can enjoy face painting, climbing walls and the army’s inflatable assault course challenge throughout the day.
Serving soldiers from across the army, including 160 (Wales) Brigade, will be on hand to demonstrate military vehicles and equipment, and army chefs will be cooking up the meals they serve to troops on the frontline, which residents can try.
A Battle of Britain fly-past over the city will close the day’s celebrations at 19:30.
Secretary of State for Wales Stephen Crabb said:
There are now fewer than three weeks to go until the global spotlight focuses on Newport as it hosts the NATO Summit. The Host City Celebrations event is being held in Newport this Saturday to mark this historic Summit and to showcase our proud host city.
The festival will give people a chance to sample the food of the countries attending the Summit and there’s a great line up of activities for people of all ages. I’m really looking forward to attending and I would encourage people to come along for a fun day out ahead of the NATO Summit.
Councillor Ray Truman, deputy leader of Newport City Council, said:
This timetable of events organised by the UK Government promises to be an exciting mix of spectacle and entertainment for all the family.
The Riverfront highlights:
10:30 Household Cavalry Band march and play music in city centre
