Overnight and weekend closures as M1 Junction 24 improvement nears completion
A series of overnight and weekend closures are planned on part of Junction 24 of the M1 in Leicestershire from tomorrow (Wednesday 25 February) as the ongoing congestion-reducing scheme enters the last few weeks of construction.
Road users are advised to allow extra time for their journeys, particularly if they are travelling to or from East Midlands Parkway or wishing to access the A453 and A6 overnight.
From tomorrow (Wednesday 25 February) until Monday 2 March, between 8pm and 6am, there will be overnight surfacing works on the roundabout. From 8pm on Friday 27 February to 6am on Monday 2 March there will be 24 hour closures in place for re-waterproofing.
During the overnight resurfacing work, the following roads will be closed at M1 junction 24:
- northbound and southbound entry slip roads to the M1
- southbound exit slip road from the M1
- A453 eastbound and westbound (to and from Nottingham)
- A6 eastbound and westbound (to and from Loughborough)
- north and south bridges over the M1
The A453 between junction 24 and East Midlands Airport, A50 eastbound and westbound, and northbound exit slip road from the M1 will all remain open although they will be subject to some lane closures. The newly opened cut through from the A50 eastbound to the A453 southbound towards the airport will also remain open.
Signed diversions will be in place via junctions 23a and 24a but road users wishing to access the A453 and A6 to and from junction 24 should use the following diversions:
- A453 traffic (including customers wishing to access East Midlands Parkway and Ratcliffe on Soar Power Station) should use M1 Junction 25, A52 and A52 Nottingham Ring Road or vice versa
- A6 traffic should use M1 junction 23 and the A512
During the 24/7 weekend closure, the following roads will be shut to re-waterproof the north bridge over the M1:
- northbound entry slip road to the M1
- southbound exit slip road from the M1
- A453 eastbound towards Nottingham
- The north bridge over the M1
Highways Agency Assistant Project Manager Robin Jackson said:
We have timed the re-waterproofing works to coincide with the overnight re-surfacing to mitigate the impact on our road users. However the re-waterproofing has to be carried out in favourable weather so if it is raining we will have to come back another time.
The A453 to and from East Midlands Airport, A50 eastbound and westbound, A6 eastbound and westbound, exit slip road from the M1 carriageway and entry slip to the southbound M1 will all remain open although they will be subject to some lane closures. The newly opened cut through from the A50 eastbound to the A453 southbound towards the airport will also remain open.
Separate signed diversions will be in place for non-motorway traffic.
