The “National Summit of Young Leaders for the Climate” was held on Friday 28 October. The summit is an initiative of the organisation Asociación Defensores del Chaco Pypore, which promotes the participation and empowerment of children and young people on issues of climate change, biodiversity and water resource management.

The event took place at the National Congress for the second consecutive year. More than 60 young people between 15 and 30 from different parts of the country were in attendance. The initiative is part of the activities promoted by the National Youth Network for Climate Action in Paraguay with the support of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADES); the National Commission for the Defence of Natural Resources (CONADERNA); the United Nations Children’s Fund Paraguay (UNICEF); Cooperation International (Coopi), AlterVida, Asociación Paraguay Orgánico, Ñañua Paraguay and the British Embassy in Asunción.

During the event, Ambassador Ramin Navai addressed the young people to congratulate them on their commitment to the fight against climate change. He noted that the youth population in Paraguay is twice as large as that of the UK, and urged the young leaders from different parts of the country to take their learning back to their respective communities.

The National Summit was streamed live on the Defensores del Chaco Pypore Association’s Facebook page and is available at this link.

Supporting youth in the fight against climate change

Both the summit and its young participants are part of the project “Empowering children, adolescents and youth for Climate Action and biodiversity conservation in Paraguay”, led by the Youth Network for Climate Action in Paraguay. The project is supported by the British Embassy in Paraguay, UNICEF Paraguay and the Ñañua Paraguay Project.

These organisations and the British Embassy have also supported the implementation of a Virtual Academy of Young Climate Leaders; a virtual simulation of COP27; and a national event called “Local Conference of Youth on Climate Change” (LCOY).

The British Embassy in Asunción also funded the participation of two young Paraguayans as part of the official delegation to COP27, to be held in Egypt in November.
