The event was a fantastic opportunity to bring together industry and defence leaders to discuss how partnering can be mutually beneficial in developing and retaining talent, being relevant in modern society and in particular in building Britain’s skills base.

The day was a great success, and attended by over 160 employers and defence personnel. We wanted to share some of the highlights from the day:

We heard from companies including Fujitsu, the AA, Atkins Global, Manpower, Jaguar Land Rover, The Federation of Small Businesses with examples of best practice from partnering with defence.

The Minister of State for the Armed Forces, Mark Francois made several key announcements on the day including:

  • defence’s successful partnering with the Department for Work and Pensions and business in helping young people get into work; the Armed Forces Employability Pathway incorporates a military life taster course for job seekers, followed by work experience with a civilian employer

  • new legislation from April 2015 allowing job seekers to complete up to 43 days training with the reserves in their first year without having to sign off

  • details of extended financial assistance for employers relating to call out and recall procedures for reservists

Vodafone joined nearly 500 businesses in pledging to support the armed forces community by signing the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant on the day.

We saw a video of 13 UK employers immersed in a once in a lifetime experience at a live Royal Marine Reserve Arctic training exercise in Norway that day.
