Secretary of State Owen Paterson MP has congratulated Rory McIlroy following his victory in the US Open Championship.

Owen Paterson said: “I send Rory McIlroy my warmest congratulations on his remarkable success.

His triumph, especially so early in his career, is inspirational to people across Northern Ireland and further afield.

With Graeme McDowell’s win last year we now have two consecutive US Open victories for Northern Ireland golfers. These two outstanding achievements place Northern Ireland, proud home to so many fine golf courses, on the world stage of sporting excellence.
