The Department for Transport has appointed Peter Wilkinson to the post of interim Franchising Director. Peter has had a long career in the rail industry, spanning the privatisation of British Rail’s train operating units, leading franchise procurements for the Strategic Rail Authority and also franchise and concession bidding both here in the UK and abroad. He has also been the Principal Advisor to Network Rail on alliancing and, most recently, was the Commercial Advisor to Richard Brown’s independent review of franchising. Peter is joining the department for 6 months, starting on Monday 28 January, to help kick-start the paused franchising programme. The scale and immediacy of the programme are such that the department is keen to bring in someone with Peter’s expertise as quickly as possible.
