Summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week.
The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Monday 1 August, and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.
M6 junctions 16 to 19: Cheshire smart motorway
Work is underway for the smart motorway upgrade – typically with 1 or 2 lanes closed overnight between junctions in both directions and/or mobile lane closures along short sections of carriageway.

M6 junctions 29 to 30
Work begins on 1 August to resurface 2 miles of carriageway between junction 29 (for Burnley) and junction 30 (for Blackburn). The work will cover 3 lanes in both directions. Work on the northbound carriageway begins on 1 August 2016 for approximately 2 nights, The work on the southbound carriageway will also begin on 1 August and will take one week. Full closures will be in place between the hours of 9pm and 5am (7am at weekends) while work takes place.
M6 Fylde Higher (M Route)
The second phase of repairs to Fylde Higher bridge, which carries the M6 southbound to the M55 westbound (M Route) has been postponed. Works are now due take place w/c 8 August. On the 10 August a full southbound carriageway closure will be in place, weather dependent. Signed diversions will be in place.
M6 junction 34 Lancaster
Lancashire County Council work off the motorway on the Heysham Link project requires a lane 1 and hard shoulder closure in both directions on the motorway around junction 34. More information is available on the Lancashire County Council website.
M6 junctions 36 to 35 Burton
Work is underway on the southbound carriageway for surfacing, drainage and barrier renewal works. There will be full overnight closures on the southbound carriageway from 1 – 5 August, weather dependent. This work is due to be completed in early August.
M60 junction 8 Sale to junction 20 Rochdale
A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers.
A significant programme of temporary night closures has been programmed to fit gantries with wiring and signs, which will take the project to May 2017. These are detailed on the journey impact tab of the project page and updated weekly, subject to weather conditions.

M60 junction 22 to junction 24
Night closures on the clockwise carriageway, Monday to Friday from 20 June 9pm to 5am (7am Saturday mornings) - for 7 weeks, for resurfacing. Signed diversions.
A556 Knutsford to Bowdon
A £192 million project is being carried out to create a new dual carriageway linking the M56 to the M6 in Cheshire. The exit slip road from the M56 at junction 7 is now closed for up to 4 months for work to provide new link roads and a new roundabout at the junction is completed. A temporary 40mph speed limit is currently in place between Bucklow Hill and Bowdon, and the new dual carriageway is expected to open in spring 2017.

A56 Rising Bridge roundabout
Work has started to improve safety and reduce delays at Rising Bridge Roundabout near Haslingden. Work will be carried out daily between 8pm and 6am, and will involve single closures on A56 and Rising Bridge roundabout. Some full carriageway closures will be needed, during which times fully signed diversion routes will be in place. Works are scheduled for completion at the end of July.
A590 Greenodd
Lane 1 of the eastbound carriageway just west of Greenodd roundabout is currently closed until further notice while we undertake a survey of the embankment.
A595 Parton and Moor Row
Following completion of the two resurfacing works last week at the above locations, work is now required to renew the road markings. These are scheduled to take place overnight from 2 August, and are expected to take 1 night at each location. Temporary traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit will be in place between 8pm and 6am.
A595 Thornhill to Blackbeck
Roadsigns and carriageway markings will be renewed between Thornhill and Blackbeck from 1 August for approximately 7 days. The majority of works will be carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am with traffic being controlled using 2 way traffic lights. Works to remove the existing markings could cause some noise disturbance to local residents, but this will be kept to a minimum.
A627(M) surfacing scheme between Junction 1 and Junction 2
Northbound and southbound carriageways, between Junction 1 and Junction 2. The scheme will include loop cutting, replacement of bridge joints as well as repairing the damaged carriageway surface.
Works are due to start on or shortly after 29 July 2016 for approximately 2 weeks (Monday to Friday), between the hours of 8pm and 5am (7am at weekends).
Full closures will be required and signed diversion routes will be in place.
A66 Brougham to Center Parcs
Resurfacing works began on 13 June to run until the middle of August. The use of traffic signals will revert back to the original programme with lights in place 24/7 from Tuesday to Thursday, and then again 8pm Friday until 7am Sunday, and overnight Monday. A temporary mandatory 40mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works, with this being reduced overnight when a 10mph convoy system will be used.
A66 Embleton
Work to reduce flood risk on a mile stretch of the A66 at Embleton has been extended until 5 August to carry out reinstatement works to the verge behind the kerbline. In order to carry out the works temporary traffic signals will be in place from 6am to 8pm
A66 Kirby Thore
Daytime traffic signals to locate and excavate blockage in duct. The works will take place between 0930 – 1315 on 1 August, 9.30am to 4pm on 2 August and 9.30am to 3pm on 3 August.
