The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of 20 May 2016 but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.
M1 junctions 6 Bricket Wood to 5 Watford, Hertfordshire
Work to improve journeys by carrying out resurfacing will continue this week. The southbound carriageway will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, from Monday 23 May for 2 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A405 and A41 to M1 junction 5.
M1 junctions 5 Watford to 4 Elstree, Hertfordshire
Work to improve journeys by carrying out resurfacing will continue this week. The southbound carriageway will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, from Wednesday 25 May for 2 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A41, A1 and A406 to M1 junction 1.
M1 junction 2 Mill Hill, Greater London: lighting repair
Work to improve journeys by carrying out lighting repairs continues this week. The southbound exit slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, on Monday 23 and Thursday 26 May. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the M1 junction 1, A406, A41 and the A1.
The northbound entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, from Tuesday 24 May for 2 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A1 and A41 to M1 junction 4.
M3 junctions 2 (M25) to 4a Farnborough, Hampshire: smart motorway improvement
Work to reduce congestion and improve journey times continues this week with narrow lanes, a contraflow and a 50mph speed limit in place on both carriageways between junctions 2 and 4a, with a free recovery service operating 24 hours a day until the end of 2016.
The dedicated link road from the M3 northbound to the M25 in both directions will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 5.30am, on Wednesday 25 May. A clearly signed diversion will be in place from M3 junction 3 via the A322 and A30 to M25 junction 13.
The dedicated link roads from the M25 in both directions to the M3 southbound will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 5.30am, from Monday 23 May for 4 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place for clockwise traffic via M25 junction 13, A30 and A331 to M3 junction 4. A clearly signed diversion will be in place for anti-clockwise traffic via M25 junction 11 and return to M25 junction 13, A30 and A331 to M3 junction 4. M4 junction 4b (M25), Greater London: carriageway resurfacing
Work to improve journeys by carrying out carriageway resurfacing will start this week. The dedicated link roads from the M4 in both directions to the M25 anti-clockwise will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 4.30am, from Wednesday 25 May for 2 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the M25 clockwise to junction 16, M40 eastbound to Denham Roundabout and return, and the M25 anti-clockwise.
M20 junction 1 Swanley, Kent: vegetation clearance
Work to improve journeys by carrying out vegetation clearance will start this week. The westbound exit slip road, including the dedicated link road to the M25 anti-clockwise, will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Monday 23 May. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A224 roundabout and return.
M25 junction 11 Chertsey, Surrey: carriageway retexturing
Work to improve journeys by carrying out carriageway retexturing will start this week. The anti-clockwise entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, from Monday 23 May for 4 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 13 and return.
M25 junction 12 (M3), Surrey: smart motorway improvement
Work to improve journeys by carrying out smart motorway improvements on the M3 continues this week. The dedicated link roads from the M25 in both directions to the M3 southbound will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 5.30am, from Monday 23 May for 4 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place for clockwise traffic via M25 junction 13, A30 and A331 to M3 junction 4. A clearly signed diversion will be in place for anti-clockwise traffic via M25 junction 11 and return to M25 junction 13, A30 and A331 to M3 junction 4.
The dedicated link road from the M25 clockwise to the M3 northbound will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 5.30am, from Monday 23 May for 2 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via M25 junction 13, A30 and A308 to M3 junction 1.
M25 junction 15 (M4), Greater London: carriageway resurfacing
Work to improve journeys by carrying out resurfacing starts this week. The anti-clockwise carriageway between the slip roads will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 4.30am, on Tuesday 24 May. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the M4 eastbound to junction 4 and return.
M25 junction 20 Kings Langley, Hertfordshire: carriageway resurfacing
Work to improve journeys by carrying out resurfacing on the Hertfordshire County Council road network will start this week. The clockwise exit slip road will have one lane closed 24 hours a day, from 9.30am on Sunday 22 May until 3.30pm on Wednesday 25 May.
M25 junction 22 London Colney, Hertfordshire: electrical repair
Work to maintain safety by carrying out electrical repairs will start this week. The clockwise exit slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Thursday 26 May. A clearly signed diversion will be in place for the exit slip road via junction 23 and return.
M25 junctions 25 (A10) to 24 Potters Bar, Hertfordshire: surveying
Work to maintain safety by carrying out carriageway surveys will continue this week. The anti-clockwise carriageway will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, from Monday 23 May for 3 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A10 northbound, A414 and A1(M) southbound to M25 junction 23.
M25 junction 28 (A12), Essex: electrical repair
Work to improve journeys by carrying out electrical repairs will start this week. The clockwise exit slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5am, on Thursday 26 May. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 29 and return.
M25 junctions 30 Thurrock to 31 Lakeside, Essex: major improvement
Work to reduce congestion and improve safety continues this week as part of a major scheme to widen the A13 and the M25 junction 30 roundabout and slip roads. The clockwise southbound link road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, from Tuesday 24 May for 3 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A13 westbound and the A1306.
A1(M) junction 4 Hatfield, Hertfordshire: electrical repair
Work to improve journeys by carrying out electrical repairs will start this week. The southbound exit slip road will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, on Tuesday 24 May. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 3 and return.
A2 Dartford Heath, Kent: carriageway resurfacing
Work to improve journeys by carrying out resurfacing will start this week. The carriageway between the slip roads will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, on Monday 23 May. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the exit and entry slip roads.
A13/M25 junction 30 Thurrock, Essex: major improvement
Work to reduce congestion and improve safety continues this week as part of a major scheme to widen the A13 and the M25 junction 30 roundabout and slip roads. On the A13, narrow lanes and a 40mph speed limit are in place and on the M25, narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit are in place. A free recovery service will operate 24 hours a day. There will be additional overnight lane and slip road closures as required. All closures will have a clearly signed diversion in place.
The eastbound A13 carriageway between Wennington (A1306) and North Stifford (A1012) will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, from Monday 23 May for 4 nights. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A1306, M25 junction 31 and the A1012.
The westbound A13 carriageway between North Stifford (A1012) and Wennington (A1306) will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, on Monday 23 May. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the A1012, A1306, M25 junction 31 and the A1306.

A40 Denham, Buckinghamshire: bridge joint replacement
Work to improve journeys by replacing bridge joints on the structure that carries the A40 over Fray’s River will continue this week. The westbound carriageway between the B483 and the Denham Roundabout will be closed overnight, between 10pm and 5.30am, on Monday 23 May. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via the B483 and the A4020.
A282 junction 1a Swanscombe, Kent: maintenance work
Work to improve journeys at the Dartford Crossing by carrying out tunnel maintenance continues this week. The northbound anti-clockwise entry slip road will be closed overnight, between 8.30pm and 5.30am, on Wednesday 25 May. A clearly signed diversion will be in place via junction 1b and return.
A282 (M25) Dartford – Thurrock Crossing: maintenance
Work to improve journeys at the Dartford Crossing continues this week. The following closures will be in place with a fully signed diversion for oversized vehicles for the northbound east tunnel closures.
- Monday 23 May (8.30pm to 5.30am): northbound east tunnel
- Tuesday 24 May (8.30pm to 5.30am): northbound east tunnel
- Wednesday 25 May (8.30pm to 5.30am): northbound west tunnel
- Thursday 26 May (8.30pm to 5.30am) northbound east tunnel
