Planned roadworks in the North West: summary for Monday 20 to Sunday 26 June 2016
Planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week.
The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 17 June, and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.
M55 drainage work
Lane 1 of the eastbound carriageway - between junction 3 and junction 1 - will be closed until Sunday 26 June as work takes place to repair the drainage system and reduce the potential of flooding from nearby fields. A 50 mph speed limit will also be in place past the roadworks. A full overnight carriageway closure will be needed at the end of the project to allow the traffic management cones and barriers to be removed. A signed diversion along local roads will be in place between junction 3 and junction 1 during the overnight closure.
M57 Junction 4 St Helens slip roads resurfacing
Overnight resurfacing of all 4 entry and exit slip roads at junction 4 of the M57 is due to be completed by Monday 20 June. The work will be carried out between 10pm and 5am each night (or 7am at weekends). Each of the slip roads will be closed at various times with clearly signed diversions.
M6 junctions 16 to 19: Cheshire smart motorway
Work is underway for the smart motorway upgrade – typically with 1 or 2 lanes closed overnight between junctions in both directions and/or mobile lane closures along short sections of carriageway. More information about the project is available on the project website.
M6 junctions 19 Knutsford to 20 (M56)
A £14.5 million programme of bridge repairs and new safety barriers is underway with narrow lanes, 50 mph speed limit and use of the hard shoulder as a running lane in places. Overnight work to start to remove the temporary narrow lanes is currently taking place, requiring lane closures. The northbound carriageway will also be closed overnight on Wednesday 22 June, and Thursday 23 June from 11pm until 5am, with a clearly signed diversion in place. M6 junctions 27 Wigan to 29 Bamber Bridge
Resurfacing work is taking place between junctions 27 and 29 of the M6, and is due to be completed in July. The work will is being carried out overnight from Monday to Friday, between 9pm and 5am, with lane closures as well as slip road closures at junction 27 only. Diversions will be in place.
M6 junction 32 – Fylde Higher Bridge – Phase 1
There will be full night time closures of the M6 southbound carriageway, and the slip road from M6 south to M55 west, in place from 12 June for 3 nights followed by lane 1 and 2 lane closures for 8 nights, followed by a full overnight closures for 3 further nights until 25th June. These closures will be in place while works are being undertaken to repair accident damage to the bridge parapet.
M6 junction 34 Lancaster
Lancashire County Council work off the motorway on the Heysham Link project requires a lane 1 and hard shoulder closure in both directions on the motorway around junction 34. The work also includes occasional M6 carriageway and slip road closures detailed in weekly traffic bulletins . As part of the work there will be a full closure on the A6 Lancaster Road between Beaumont College and Hest Bank Lane. 11pm Friday 24 June to 6am Monday 27 June for tie-in works and realignment of the A6 over the new bridge.
On the M6 northbound exit slip road, there will be a full closure 8pm Friday 24 to 6am Saturday 25 June for removal of Varioguard and installation of traffic management.
M60 junction 8 Sale to junction 20 Rochdale
A major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers.
A significant programme of temporary night closures has been programmed to fit gantries with wiring and signs, which will take the project to May 2017. These are detailed on the journey impact tab of the project page and updated weekly, subject to weather conditions.

M60 junction 16 Swinton to junction 15 Bolton/Preston
We’ll be carrying out 3 weeks of overnight ground survey work between Junction 16 and Junction 15 of the anti-clockwise M60 - approximately 200 yards west of the A666 Clifton overbridge – on or shortly after Monday (6 June). When work is taking place the anti-clockwise carriageway will be closed between 10pm and 5am (or until 7am at weekends) each night. The closure will be between junction 16 and junction 14 with a clearly signed diversion route in place.
M60 junction 22 to junction 24
Night closures on the clockwise carriageway, Monday to Friday from June 20, 9pm to 5am (7am Saturday morning) for 7 weeks, for resurfacing. Signed diversions.
M61 - junction 2 to junction 4
21 June between 10pm and 5am, northbound carriageway closed for cabling works.

M67 junction 1 to Junction 4
Road marking renewal Work will commence on or shortly after 20 June 2016 and will take approximately 2 weeks to complete in a number of phases, Monday to Sunday, between the hours of 10pm and 5am (by 7am at weekends).
Night closures on the westbound carriageway, between J4 and J1 from 20 to 25 June, and on the eastbound carriageway, between junction 1 and 4 (27 June to 3 July). Signed diversions.
A556 Knutsford to Bowdon
A £192 million project is being carried out to create a new dual carriageway linking the M56 to the M6 in Cheshire. The eastbound exit slip road at junction 7 of the M56 (Altrincham) will be closed from 9pm on Friday 10 June until 5am on Monday 13 June, and again from 9pm on Friday 17 June until 5am on Monday 20 June. Drivers are being advised to either exit at junction 9 and follow diversion signs, or exit at junction 6 and return on the westbound M56 to exit at junction 7. A temporary 40mph speed limit is currently in place between Bucklow Hill and Bowdon, and the new dual carriageway is expected to open in spring 2017. A56 Rising Bridge roundabout
Work has started to improve safety and reduce delays at Rising Bridge Roundabout near Haslingden. Works will be carried out daily between 10pm and 5am, and will involve single closures on A56 and Rising Bridge roundabout. Some full carriageway closures will be needed, during which times fully signed diversion routes will be in place. Works are scheduled for completion at the end of July.
A590 Greenodd
Lane 1 of the eastbound carriageway just west of Greenodd roundabout is currently closed until further notice while we undertake a survey of the embankment.
A590 Lindal-in-Furness
Drainage installation works to alleviate flooding will commence on 11 June and is due to be completed by 9 July. Temporary traffic signals will be used at various times, throughout the day or night, with on occasion, motorists being escorted through the works using a convoy system. A temporary mandatory 40mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works, with this being reduced to 10mph when the convoy system is used.
A66 Kirkby Thore
Work started on Monday, 23 May on safety improvements. During the work 2 or 3 way traffic lights will be in place to manage traffic past the installation works but only during off peak hours, with works due to be completed by Sunday, 26 June.
A66 Brougham to Center Parcs
Resurfacing works will commence on 13 June and run until the end of July. Temporary traffic signals will be in place primarily at night but at times during the day for certain stages of the work, with, on occasion, motorists being escorted through the works using a convoy system. A temporary mandatory 40mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works, with this being reduced to 10mph when the convoy system is used.
A66 Threlkeld to Scales
Resurfacing works will commence on 13 June and run until the end of the month. Temporary traffic signals will be in place primarily at night but at times during the day for certain stages of the work, with, on occasion, motorists being escorted through the works using a convoy system. A temporary mandatory 40mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works, with this being reduced to 10mph when the convoy system is used. Side road closures will also take place at certain times during the work.
A66 Braithwaite to Portinscale safety improvements
Work to improve footpaths, cycle ways, road markings and traffic signs started on Monday, 9 May and is due to be completed by end of June.
Temporary traffic lights will be in place but usually between 9am and 4pm – outside peak travel times - to help reduce inconvenience to road users, although they may remain in situ out with these times for safety reasons.
A66 Embleton
Work to reduce flood risk on a mile stretch of the A66 at Embleton began in January and is expected to be completed by the end of July.
Temporary traffic lights operate 24 hours a day for the safety of crews and drivers. Full road closures in both directions will also be required on some nights between 8pm and 6am, and at some weekends.
When the road is closed, diversions for HGVs and other vehicles will be clearly signed. Drivers are advised to use the A591 and the A595. This route is not suitable for HGVs which should use the M6 and A595.
