PM call with General Buhari, President elect of Nigeria, 1 April 2015

David Cameron spoke with General Buhari, President elect of Nigeria.

A Downing Street spokesperson said:

Prime Minister David Cameron spoke to General Buhari to congratulate him on his historic election win in Nigeria. General Buhari said that the UK had been a very helpful partner to Nigeria and that he wanted to build on that relationship as he stepped into his new role.

The Prime Minister said that the UK would continue to support Nigeria, including by strengthening trade relations, and helping Nigeria to fight terrorism in the region and tackle corruption. The Prime Minister wished General Buhari well during the transition period and said he looked forward to working with him.

The Prime Minister also welcomed the credible and peaceful elections, under President Jonathan’s leadership, which have left a lasting legacy for the Nigerian people.
