The Prime Minister called Prime Minister of Iraq, Haider Al-Abadi this morning to congratulate him on the retaking of Ramadi.
A Downing Street spokesperson said:
The Prime Minister called the Prime Minister of Iraq, Haider Al-Abadi this morning to congratulate him on the retaking of Ramadi which had been under the control of Daesh.
Both leaders agreed this was a significant step forward and Prime Minister Abadi said the focus would now be on helping people to return home by ensuring the security of the city and restoring basic services and governance.
Prime Minister Abadi noted that Iraq was in a much stronger position to secure peace. He thanked Prime Minister David Cameron for the UK’s contribution, through air strikes and military training, which Prime Minister Abadi said had helped the Army to make advances against Daesh. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Iraq and working as part of the global coalition to destroy Daesh.
Finally, they discussed the Syria pledging conference which the UK will host in February 2016 and the Prime Minister underlined that the UK will continue to provide support to those in Iraq.
