Regius Professor of Civil Law, Oxford University: Wolfgang Ernst
The Queen has approved that Professor Wolfgang Ernst be appointed Regius Professor of Civil Law in the University of Oxford.
The Queen has approved that Professor Wolfgang Ernst, Professor for Roman and Civil Law at Zurich University, be appointed Regius Professor of Civil Law in the University of Oxford in succession to Professor Boudewijn Sirks.
Professor Wolfgang Ernst
Professor Wolfgang Ernst is currently Professor for Roman and Civil Law at Zurich University (since 2004). He was previously Professor for Roman and Civil Law at Bonn University (2000 to 2004) and before that he was Professor of Roman and Civil Law at Tuebingen University in Germany (1990 to 2000). He serves as an elected expert for the German National Endowment for the Humanities and as President of the Research Council of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
He graduated from the University of Bonn with a PhD in 1981 and from Yale Law School with an LL.M in 1982 and achieved his Habilitation in 1989 from Bonn University. He has a considerable international reputation in the field of Roman Law and its impact on medieval and modern legal doctrines. Among his recent research interests are the legal history of money and of social choice.
