Remembrance Sunday 2014 in Japan: Wear a poppy with pride

Remembrance Sunday 2014

The British Embassy in Tokyo will be represented at the formal Remembrance Day Service held at The Commonwealth War Cemetery, Hodogaya, Yokohama on Sunday 9 November 2014 at 1030 hrs. The service is hosted this year by the Canadian Embassy and is open for members of the public to participate if they wish. The embassy will be represented by Ambassador HE Mr Tim Hitchens and The Defence Attaché Capt. Charles Ashcroft.

A wreath will also be laid during a private ceremony at the embassy and staff will be invited to observe a two minute silence at 11am on the morning of 11 November.

In western Japan, British Consul-General Michael Shearer is attending an armistice ceremony in Mie prefecture on 1 November and a WWI centenary commeration event at Kobe Foreigners’ Cemetery on 11 November.

In the UK, Remembrance Sunday is held on the Sunday nearest to 11 November (Remembrance Day). This anniversary marks the end of World War I on 11 November 1918 and the Remembrance service is to commemorate British Commonwealth and Allied personnel who lost their lives in the two World Wars of the 20 Century and subsequent conflicts.

2015 will mark the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII, with a host of events planned in the UK and around the world.
