Repairing damage to the strategic road network

Statement on charging for the cost of repairing damage to the strategic road network.

A spokesperson for the Highways Agency, which manages, maintains, and operates England’s network of motorways and trunk roads on behalf of the Secretary of State for Transport, said:

“It is not right that the taxpayer should bear the costs of repairing damage to the strategic road network where it may be possible to recover those costs from whoever is responsible for the damage. We therefore seek where appropriate, either directly or through our service providers, to recover the cost of repairs from insurance companies or individuals.

“We expect our service providers to have a clear, fair process in place and to act responsibly in dealing with claims.”
