I am delighted to have this opportunity to mark the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

At the beginning of this new Jewish year, millions around the world will come together with their friends and family to reflect on the year gone by and make resolutions and plans for all that is to come in the year ahead.

At this important time, I want to join with all of you in expressing my hope for the future: that this new year will see progress towards a lasting peace for Israel and the Middle East.

I pay tribute to all those involved who have taken the brave step to return to the negotiating table and I hope that they will find the courage and determination to continue in dialogue until a lasting solution is found.

At this moment, I would also like to recognise Britain’s Jewish community for their incredible contribution to our country. You have given Britain so much in so many fields and I want to thank you for it.

So enjoy the festivities and all that remains is for me to say Shanah Tovah.
