Pan-American delegation of scientists forge new links with Falklands counterparts
Pan-American scientists in the Falklands
Visiting scientists from “all corners of the Americas” have received a warm welcome to the Falkland Islands.
The delegates from the US, Canada, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico and Chile are experts in a range of fields including marine ecology, oceanography and geology and are on a week-long visit at the invitation of the Falkland Islands Government and the South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI). They are taking part in the Falkland Islands Science Symposium, investigating opportunities for collaboration between themselves, SAERI and other groups in the region.
At a reception hosted by His Excellency the Governor, Mr Colin Roberts, the Pan-American delegation sampled local hospitality as they mingled with members of the Falkland Islands community.
Mr Roberts said science, research and collaboration were “incredibly important” to Falkland Islanders: “We need to understand the environment in which we live, we need to understand how to manage our impacts on it and interactions with it and how best to protect it.
“We are also conscious that we have something very special here in the Falkland Islands and, looking further south to the other South Atlantic islands, particularly South Georgia. We want to share that with the international scientific community and make sure that all the extraordinary things that we know are here are better understood.”
