Qatar Airway’s announcement of a new route from Edinburgh to Doha underlines Edinburgh’s status as a city of “global significance”, Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael said today.

He commented on the day that Qatar Airways Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker was in Edinburgh to unveil details about the new route.

From 28 May business and leisure travellers will be able to travel direct to Doha from Edinburgh Airport thanks to flights departing five times a week.

Mr Carmichael said:

This is great news and underlines Edinburgh’s status as a city of global significance.

May will be an exciting time for Edinburgh Airport with Qatar Airways new route to Doha and US Airways set to launch a new daily route to Philadelphia. More direct flights is great news for business and leisure travellers in Scotland. This route will also open more doors across Asia, the Middle East and Australia.

By building a stronger, more competitive economy we are providing a stable and competitive environment which is creating jobs and encouraging investment. With the OECD forecasting the UK’s economy to grow faster than any other G7 economy in the first half of this year it is clear that Scotland is the moving in the right direction.
