Scottish Secretary attends Royal National Mod
Gaelic culture is an enormously important part of Scottish cultural life, says Carmichael.
Gaelic culture continues to be an important part of our national cultural life, Scottish Secretary Alistair Carmichael has said.
The Minister attended the 110th Royal National Mod in Paisley on Wednesday evening and presented the winner of this year’s Silver Pendant, recognised as one of the most prestigious singing competition for Gaelic learners
Mr Carmichael said:
It is many years since I last attended a national Mod but I am delighted to be back. It was an enormous honour to have been invited by An Comunn Gaidhealach to present the silver medal and it’s something I’ve been looking forward to greatly.
Gaelic remains an enormously important part of Scottish cultural life which requires to be nurtured and cherished. It pleases my heart to see its growth especially through Gaelic Medium Education.
It should not be forgotten that for many years it was An Comunn Gaidhealach and the local and national Mods that shouldered the burden of keeping the flame alive when not many other people were interested.
Today the UK Government continues to support Scottish culture as the extra £1m of funding for BBC Alba announced during the spending round earlier this year shows.
