Speaking after the meeting, the Secretary of State said:

My predecessors in this role have worked closely with their counterparts in Dublin . I am determined to have the same close and constructive relationship with Tanaiste Gilmore and his colleagues as they did.

The Prime Minister and the Taoiseach set out a new framework for the growing and deepening relationship between our two countries in their Joint Statement in March this year. In relation to Northern Ireland specifically, we have an important role in supporting the political institutions and working to establish a peaceful, stable and prosperous society in which everyone has a shared future. In addition, we will continue to strengthen co-operation between our two countries where our interests overlap on a range of economic and other matters.
