Secretary of State pays tribute to Lady Thatcher

Rt Hon Theresa Villiers MP pays tribute to former Prime Minister

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

On learning of the death of Lady Thatcher, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Theresa Villiers said:

“It is with great sadness that I heard of the death of Lady Thatcher. She was one of our greatest Prime Ministers. During her period of office she transformed the UK from being the sick man of Europe, to a country that once again stood proud on the world stage.

“I appreciate that in Northern Ireland there will be mixed views about her legacy here. Yet in all that she did, Lady Thatcher acted out of duty, conviction and patriotism. Above all, during the height of the troubles in Northern Ireland, she remained steadfast in her determination that democracy and the rule of law would always prevail.”
