Secretary of State praises role of military at Armed Forces Day
Alun Cairns: “In the year that we mark the 100th anniversary of the Somme, it is particularly important we support Armed Forces Day"
Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns will today attend the South Wales Armed Forces Day being held in Caerphilly.
Mr Cairns will watch a tri-service march of serving personnel, veterans and candidates through the town followed by the Drumhead Service at Caerphilly Castle. Other activities include live music throughout the afternoon.
The Secretary of State said:
This year’s events are particularly poignant as we mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. I recently had the opportunity to visit the war cemetery at Mametz, and the experience of seeing so many young lives sacrificed is a powerful one.
Today is our opportunity to thank our servicemen and women and acknowledge their contribution in conflicts throughout history and up to the present day. I hope everyone gets the chance to join in an Armed Forces Day event.
