Sellafield Ltd’s ‘Women’s Engineering Society’ are celebrating their success after winning the ‘Regional Innovation’ category at this year’s Women in Nuclear UK Awards.

The announcement came at a prestigious awards ceremony in Manchester this week.

The awards are an opportunity to recognise and celebrate those who have gone above and beyond to champion diversity and inclusion within their own organisation and further afield.

The Sellafield’s Women’s Engineering Society (WES) was formed in 2019 (the centenary year of the Women’s Engineering Society) to create a diverse engineering industry at Sellafield, and their mission is to enable women in engineering to fulfil their potential and support the engineering industry to be inclusive.

They officially partnered with the ‘Women’s Engineering Society’ in 2022.

The ‘Regional Innovation’ category was introduced to provide recognition for those working to promote gender balance in the nuclear industry and to highlight the changing culture of the nuclear industry to be more inclusive and specifically to address gender balance.

The society was nominated by Jennifer Maher, manufactured products delivery manager, Sellafield Ltd.

I nominated the WES team because they have run events and webinars to support women at all career stages at Sellafield, in order to retain them and help them reach their goals. The win was well deserved and will encourage them to continue.

With more entries than ever this year, the judging panel thoroughly enjoyed reading about the contributions individuals and organisations are making and how they are positively impacting the nuclear sector.

Attendees at the event to receive the award are all active members of the society and work across the Sellafield site in various roles.
