Senior appointments to CMA’s Digital Markets Unit

3 senior directors appointed as CMA continues to prepare for new digital markets responsibilities.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today announced 3 senior appointments to help lead preparations for the new digital markets competition regime. 

The passing of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers (DMCC) Act in May granted the CMA new responsibilities to promote competition through a new, forward-looking digital markets competition regime. The 3 senior directors will lead the CMA’s preparations as it gets ready for the new regime, which is expected to come into force later this year. 

The senior directors are:

Cat Batchelor

Cat, an existing director at the CMA, has been leading work to prepare for the new digital markets competition regime. Cat previously led the Digital Markets Taskforce, providing advice to the government on the design and implementation of pro-competition measures prior to the introduction of the DMCC legislation. Before the CMA Cat worked in a range of roles at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), considering competition and innovation in financial services.

Tania Van den Brande

Tania will join the CMA from Ofcom later this year. Tania leads Ofcom’s work in digital markets, including its recent market study into cloud services as well as supporting the implementation of the new Online Safety Act.

Euan MacMillan

Euan, also an existing director at the CMA, has been responsible for leading work to prepare for the new digital regime. Euan has previously worked around the world on economic analysis, programming, and policy – including through postings to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Pakistan.

They are part of a brilliant team we are building to oversee a new, targeted regime – ensuring we will be best placed to tackle harmful practices and deliver positive outcomes for people, businesses and the UK economy.
