Ambassador Designate Hugo Shorter met Prime Minister Tammam Salam today to express his condolences for the attack in Southern Beirut on 12 November and to hand over a letter from Prime Minister David Cameron.

Following the meeting Shorter said:

Today I assured Prime Minister Salam of the UK’s continued support for Lebanon’s security and stability, and passed on my Prime Minister’s deepest sympathy for this callous attack on peaceful citizens going about their daily business. In his letter, he extended his condolences to the victims and their families. The UK stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Lebanon as they face, and defeat, the perpetrators of terrorism.

I also expressed the UK’s hope that recent political momentum will create the will to resolve the ongoing political impasse, and in particular the Presidential vacuum. National unity is now more important than ever.
