12 December 2016 - Last week in Brasilia, the Secretary of State for International Trade, Dr. Liam Fox signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services of the Federative Republic of Brazil (MDIC), agreeing to the exchange of information on national strategies for the dissemination of Building Information Modelling. The memorandum is an incentive to promote opportunities for sustainable growth and trade in the construction and digital economy sectors of both countries.

The use of this model in construction allows for more transparency and better use of public resources, once it reduces the cost of construction works. Recently, with the launch of the Crescer programme, Brazilian government showed the importance of these assets in future public works. Other benefits of this method include the reduction of rework, with the possibility of testing previous solutions, and a better visualisation of project stages.

Adam Matthews, International Director, UK BIM Task Group said:

The global construction and infrastructure market is rapidly transitioning to digital technology known as Building Information Modelling (BIM). BIM can de-risk projects, increase sector productivity and improve the quality of its outputs.

Under this MOU, the Brazilian and UK Governments recognise the value of aligning national strategies for BIM to create a fertile environment for trade and growth for the construction sectors of both countries in this era of digital construction.
