Statement from the EU Members in Bahrain‏

The EU Member States’ Ambassadors of Italy, France, Germany and the United Kingdom based in Bahrain, in their statement of 24 September welcomed the legislative elections to be held on 22 and 29 November 2014, and encouraged the participation of all political societies and the people of Bahrain in the electoral process in the spirit of national reconciliation.

It is therefore with deep disappointment that the EU Member States’ Ambassadors based in Bahrain note the announcement on 11 October by the National Democratic Opposition societies that they will boycott the legislative and municipal elections. Given the regional situation, we believe it imperative for rebuilding the trust and confidence necessary for stability and progress in Bahrain that all those committed to the democratic process participate in the elections. We therefore urge the National Democratic Opposition parties to reconsider their boycott.
