Thailand and the UK partnership - Rape & Sexual Assault Victim Handling Seminars
The British Embassy Bangkok hosted a seminar on Rape and Sexual Assault and victim handling.
The British Embassy hosted two seminars on Rape & Sexual Assault (RSA) Victim Handling in Bangkok, and another in Chiang Mai. Participants included the Royal Thai Police, government agencies, Embassies, Non-Governmental Organisations, including Thailand Institute for Justice, and health service providers attended. The aim was to share knowledge and best practice to enhance the service provided across Thailand to victims. Guest speakers included the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Consular Police Advisor, Mr Paul Davidson, and Ms Sita Sumrit of the Thailand Institute of Justice.
The event promoted the sensitive handling of victims of RSA by the police and other linked services, aimed at reducing possible further trauma by sharing understanding of the victim’s emotional journey from the incident through to their supported recovery.
Through building partnerships which support consular services in Thailand, and encouraging information sharing between different agencies and stakeholders, there can be benefits for not only British nationals, but also Thai nationals, and victims from other countries.
Mark Kent, British Ambassador to Thailand, said:
I am delighted with the support we have received for this event. Rape and Sexual Assault is an important, global issue which can have an enormous impact on individuals’ lives. The British Embassy Consular Team provides assistance and support to British people in Thailand, including working with victims of trauma.
There are some general ways of working with victims that can help to prevent people from suffering any further trauma: the seminars aim to explore these.
The UK has undergone a learning journey in recent years, and these seminars aim to share these experiences with other experts and partners in order to continue to improve the services we collectively offer to victims.
